Scots say legal services should be independently regulated
With the Legal Services (Scotland) Bill currently going through the Scottish Parliament, new research from Which? shows that around seven in ten Scots (71%) think that legal services should be regulated independently.
 
 
 
More lawyers seeking help and advice
LawCare, a charity that provides counselling support and advice to members of the legal profession, has seen a 10% increase in the number of calls for help last year, reports the Law Gazette.
 
 
 
SLC legal assistant posts
The Scottish Law Commission is currently seeking a small number of law graduates for fixed-term appointments of one year, to work as legal assistants on current and planned law reform projects. Appointments will start in September 2010. 
 
 
Brodies launches PlanningBlog
Brodies LLP has launched a new blog for discussion of planning news and issues. "PlanningBlog" is run by Brodies' Planning team and provides comment on hot topics of interest to planners, developers, local authorities, contractors, property consultants and all organisations involved in the planning application and approval process. 
 
 
 
STEP launches dedicated journal website
The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) has launched a new website for their award winning flagship publication, the STEP Journal, www.stepjournal.org . 
 
 
 
Partner resignation
Archibald Campbell and Harley has announced the resignation of Rory Milne from the partnership effective as of 31st January 2010. After more than 22 years with the firm in the commercial property team, Rory is leaving to commence practice on his own account. 
 
 
 
New oil & gas upstream appointment
Paull & Williamsons has announced a senior appointment to its upstream oil & gas team. Brian Hemming joins the firm as a partner following his move from Maersk Oil North Sea UK Limited, where he was a member of the senior management team and Director of Legal, Contracts and Business Relations.  
 
 
 
WJM appoints two new partners
WJM has appointed two new partners, Andy McFarlane and Fraser Gillies. Both appointments take effect from 1st February. Andy is taking over as Head of the WJM Energy Team in place of David Bone, who is leaving the firm for pastures new. The new team will have four partners, including Fraser who will also lead the firm’s growth in planning law and continue to develop a broad practice in commercial dispute resolution. In further changes, Ken McCracken has been appointed as Chief Executive and Graham Bell as Deputy Chief Executive.
 
 
 
New consultant for Morton Fraser
Caroline Docherty, formerly of Bell & Scott, has joined Morton Fraser's real estate team as a consultant, reports the Journal Online.

Suspects seek help from police
Two men from North Caroline inexplicably decided to phone the police for help after their car got a flat tyre, despite the fact that, only four hours earlier, they were allegedly involved in a convenience store robbery, reports the Charlotte Observer. Unfortunately for them, the police who came to their assistance recognised them from video footage of the robbery, and they were promptly arrested.
