Legal amendment to make stalking a crime
The Justice Secretary, Kenny MacAskill, is to look at amending the Criminal Justice and Licensing Bill to enable the courts to treat stalking as a statutory offence, reports the Times.
EHRC proposes fundamental changes to employment policies
The Equality and Human Rights Commission has launched a set of proposals for fundamental changes to employment policies to open up more work opportunities for older Britons and address the challenges of an ageing workforce. The proposals include abolishing the default retirement age, the extension of the right to request flexible working to all, overhauling employer recruitment practices to prevent discrimination and improved training and development.
Committee supports tougher treatment for dog owners
Dog owners who do not keep their pets under control could face a raft of tough new penalties under a Member’s Bill supported by the Local Government and Communities Committee.
End of the road for tobacco displays
Moves to make smoking less attractive to children have been approved by the Scottish Parliament. MSPs voted to approve the Tobacco and Primary Medical Services (Scotland) Bill which will bring an end to the display of cigarettes and tobacco products in shops as well as banning sales from vending machines.

Updated Scottish prison population projections have been released by Scotland's Chief Statistician. The statistical release Scottish prison population projections: 2009-10 to 2018-19 includes information on recent trends in the Scottish prison population and the methodology used to produce the projections.

December figures for the main high street banks
Mortgage lending strengthened slightly in December, with gross lending inflated by some borrowers pushing through purchases ahead of the end of stamp duty relief.
